Applications for Bacterial Profiling

EpiPhany’s unique method is rapid, low cost, and produces unprecedented levels of discrimination among strains of bacteria. This information may be applied for many purposes across numerous industries, including:

Research:

Authors of the Science paper “A Unified Initiative to Harness Earth’s Microbiomes”1  propose “an interdisciplinary Unified Microbiome Initiative to discover and advance tools to understand and harness the capabilities of Earth’s microbial ecosystems.”

Human and Animal Medical Research:

Identification and isolation of previously unidentified pathogenic bacterial strains may lead to more effective treatments of infectious diseases. The study of bacterial populations surrounding and inside tumors may uncover more targeted and less toxic therapies.

Food production:

Understanding the microbiomes of soils and starter cultures may allow producers of wine, cheese and bread to improve the soil, change management practices and modify starter cultures to enhance the flavor, texture, and aroma of their products. Other fermented products and probiotics can be similarly studied and improved.

Forensic science:

Investigators can accurately identify the continuum of bacterial species that contribute to the decomposition process of tissue over time, making it possible to more accurately determine the time of a victim’s death.

EpiPhany is intended for research use only, and is not for use in diagnostic procedures.
